As many eight Indian boxers – seven female and one male – entered the finals in different categories, making it the nation’s best performance.

Eight Indian boxers entered the finals in various weight categories at the AIBA Youth Boxing World Championships in Kielce, Poland on Tuesday, making it the country’s best showing at the renowned tournament.

Former Asian youth champion Babyrojisana Chanu (51 kg), who beat European champion Alexas Kubicka in the quarters, made light work of Italian Elen Ayari to earn a unanimous 5-0 win. The Manipuri boxer was at her attacking best throughout the bout.

The in-form Babyrojisana Chanu will square off against Russia’s Valeria Linkova in the final.

Star boxer Alfiya Pathan also made it to the final of the 81kg after overcoming tough competition from Poland’s Oliwia Toborek.

The Indian pugilist could not find her rhythm in the initial round but attacked from the get-go in the second and third rounds to prevail in a 3-2 split verdict in a busy and intense bout. She will now take on Moldova’s Daria Kozorev for the gold medal.

Joining the duo in the finals were Gitika (48kg), Poonam (57kg), Vinka (60kg),  
Arundhati Choudhary (69kg) and Sanamcha Chanu (75kg).

Gitika, Poonam and Arundhati Choudhary unanimously won their bouts 5-0.

However, both Vinka and Sanamcha Chanu faced stiff resistance in their semis clash but after losing the initial rounds, came swinging back to win 4-1 via a split verdict.

Among the men, only Sachin (56kg) was able to progress into the finals as he comfortably defeated 2018 European Junior Champion Michele Baldassi of Italy 5-0 to set up the summit clash with Kazakhstan’s Yerbolat Sabyr.

Three other men – Bishwamitra Chongthom (49kg), Ankit Narwal (64kg) and Vishal Gupta (91kg) lost their respective semi-final bouts and signed off with bronze medals.

All seven women’s boxers will play their gold medal matches on Thursday while Sachin, the only male Indian boxer in the final, will play his bout on Friday.
