Thailand Open LIVE: Lakshya Sen eyes semifinal spot, Kiran George faces Toma Junior Popov in quarterfinal

Lakshya Sen and Kiran George are the only remaining Indians at the Thailand Open 2023. Both the players will be in action in their respective quarterfinal matches on Friday, 2nd June 2023. Lakshya Sen faces qualifier Leong Jun Hao while Kiran George aims to continue his terrific form. He will be up against Christo Popov. 

Quarterfinal Matches

Kiran George vs Toma Junior Popov – 1.10 PM

Kiran George vs Toma Junior Popov

Kiran George has grabbed eyeballs with his terrific performances in the tournament so far. The World No.59 began his campaign with a 21-18, 22-20 victory against Shi Yu Qi. In the second round he yet again clinched another upset win by defeating China’s Weng Hong Yang in straight games to enter his career’s maiden quarterfinal in a Super 500 tournament.

He now faces Toma Junior Popov for a spot in the semifinal. Like George, Popov also won both his matches in the tournament so far in straight games. He defeated Nhat Nguyen in the first round. In the second round, he clinched a 21-17, 20-22 victory against sixth seed Angus Ng Ka Long.

Both the players have met once in the tour so far. It was at the 2019 SaarLorLiux Open and Kiran George defeated the Frenchman in straight games. The Indian aims yet another win against the World No.28 opponent.

Lakshya Sen vs Leong Jun Hao

Lakshya Sen will be in action in his second quarterfinal this season. He last reached the last-eight stage in a tournament at the Indonesian Masters in January this year. Lakshya began his campaign with a come-from-behind 21-23, 21-15, 21-15 win against Wang Tzu Wei. In the second round, he clinched a straight game win against Li Shi Feng.

Leong Jun Hao entered the tournament as a qualifier. He made it to the main draw and defeated Sitthikom Thammasin 16-21, 21-16, 21-12 in the first round. In the second round too he dropped the first game against Christop Popov. However he made a terrific comeback to win the contest 20-22, 13-21, 19-21.

Both the players met twice in the tour and share a -1 head-to-head record. Their last meeting was way back in 2019 with Lakshya Sen winning the contest in straight games. The Indian will yet again be the favourite in the upcoming contest.
